Cape Hatteras National Seashore--This 75 mile stretch of preserved seashore stretches from Bodie Island through Hatteras and Oracoke Islands. While here you can go shelling, birding, kayaking, fishing, boating or swimming. Beware, there are no lifeguard stations along the seashore. Also while here you should check out the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It is the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. and is open for climbing (all 208ft of it)!
Cape Hatteras National Seashore Chicamacomico Lifesaving Historic Site--This is considered to be the most complete lifesaving station still intact in the US. Built in 1874 with a second addition in 1911, these buildings are still standing, equipped as they used to be. There are numerous exhibits detailing the equipment and how it was used.
Chicamacomico Lifesaving Historic Site Fort Raleigh National Historic Site--This National Park marks the site where Sir Walter Raleigh and his explorers tried to establish their colonists before they disappeared in 1857. The Elizabethan Gardens are a beautiful living memorial to the colonists. Also held here is “The Lost Colony” an outdoor drama held each year depicting the colonists story. Started in 1937, this drama is the longest running outdoor drama.
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site Jockey’s Ridge State Park--The largest sand dune located here just begs to be climbed. Kids and adults alike enjoy rolling down this enormous dune. If you aren’t a fan of sand in your pants you might want to bring a kite, as the dune is perfectly situated to capture the Outer Banks winds.
Jockey's Ridge State Park Kitty Hawk Kites/Carolina Outdoors--This store is not just a place to buy kites (something you should do though while your there). They offer lots of rentals and lessons on activities such as: hang gliding, kayaking, kiteboarding, parasailing and jet skiing. You could also schedule a fishing, boat or air tour here as well.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Wright Brothers National Memorial--Come see where flying got started. This memorial has full size reproductions of their first glider and powered plane. The memorial does a great job of showing all of the little details and history involved in their historic flight.
