In 1755, settler Thomas Polk (uncle of United States President James K.
Polk) built a home at the crossroads of an Indian trading path and the
Great Wagon Road. This eventually became the village of Charlotte Town,
incorporated in 1768. Both the city and its county are named for the German-born wife of British King George III, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The loyalty to King George and Britain in general was short-lived, however. On May 20, 1775, townsmen allegedly became some of the first revolutionaries and signed a proclamation that became known as the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. The feisty Charlotteans and their village earned, from a rather frustrated General Cornwallis, the nickname "Hornets Nest" during a series of skirmishes between British troops and the village. But Charlotte's history doesn't stop there, in 1799 gold was discovered and Charlotte eventually became a financial hub when, in 1837, Congress established a branch of the United States Mint there. On the savvy side, Charlotte's banking industry has, not surprisingly, become prominent with both the Bank of America and Wachovia's starting point within it's borders. Today, Charlotte is the country's second largest banking center, second only to New York City. Despite the booming economy, Charlotte has strove to retain her historical image. |
