Navy Pier Opened in 1916, Navy Pier was originally designed as a shipping and recreational facility, and served as a military base during both world wars, a venue for exhibitions and concerts and also as a temporary campus for the Chicago branch of the University of Illinois. When the pier fell into disuse during the 80's and 90's, the ownership of the Pier was transferred to the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, and was redesigned into a unique recreational facility and tourist attraction.
