Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a huge freshwater lake located between California and Nevada. It has 72ft of shoreline (much of federally protected now) and is the 2nd deepest lake in the U.S. In fact, Lake Tahoe never freezes. The region inhabited around the lake is what we now refer to as “Lake Tahoe” and consists mostly of ski resorts and casinos (on the Nevada side).

Lake Tahoe was originally inhabited by the Washoe Tribe of Native Americans until the gold rush era came. The lake area was so depleted of trees in the late 1800s that committees were formed to help regulate growth and protect the land. In recent years the crystal clear blue waters have been losing clarity at an alarming rate. The original committees weren’t able to do a whole lot at the time, but since the 1980s the land has had a lot more help from environmental groups.

Tahoe became famous as a tourism destination in large part due to the 1960 Winter Olympics being held in Squaw Valley. People realized the potential draw the area had for recreation both in winter and summer months, and flocked to take part. Today Lake Tahoe is frequented by skiers in the winter; boaters, hikers and bikers in the summer.
