Alcatraz -- Reached by the Blue & Gold's ferries
from Pier 41 at Fisherman's Wharf, this island, known as "The Rock" was home to
the maximum security prison that once held such famous criminals as Al Capone,
Machine Gun Kelly, and the "Birdman of Alcatraz," Robert Stroud. Golden Gate Bridge -- Connecting San Francisco to Marin County and the Redwood Highway, the Golden Gate Bridge has a length of 8981 feet with a main span of 4200 feet. It is one of the longest single-span suspension bridges ever built and features the world's highest bridge towers at nearly 750 feet above the water. Southbound crossings are $5, however northbound traffic crosses for free. There are also pedestrian walkways across the entire bridge which offer fantastic views of the bay. Chinatown -- Covering approximately 16 square blocks, more Chinese live in this "city within a city" then any other place in the world outside of China. The main street through Chinatown is Grant Avenue and is lined with Chinese groceries, theatres, tearooms, shops, Chinese temples, and schools. There are several walking and bus tours available. Cable Car Museum and Powerhouse Viewing Gallery -- Dedicated to San Francisco's early transit system, the Cable Car Museum contains several models, photograph's, relics, and demonstrations of how cable cars work. Also features the first cable car ever built in 1873. |
